ASUKA II left Yokohama at 14:00 of January 30 receiving warm and festive “bon voyage” from many people to see us off on the Passenger Terminal Deck. The sea was calm and gentle. It did not take us long to unpack and settle comfortably in the cabin.
31 Jan. The Ship sailed down to the south after picking up more passengers at Kobe.

1 Feb. 10:00-We sailed through the Strait of Osumi between the Osumi Peninsula closely seen on the starboard side and Tanegashima Island invisible as it was too far beyond the horizon. 11:20-Passed Cape Sata, a cape at the southernmost point of the Kyushu island, Japan.

From Cape Sata, our captain made a roundabout way a little northwestward to show us Kaimondake volcano from the sea. The shape of Kaimondake, 924 meters above sea level, looked as well-balanced as from the land side. I kept seeing it until it became very small, thinking that was probably the last Japanese land I saw before I returned to Japan more than one month later.
