‘Hiroshima Peace Memorial (広島平和記念碑, Hiroshima heiwa kinenhi?), commonly called the Atomic Bomb Dome or Genbaku Dōmu (原爆ドーム?, A-Bomb Dome), in Hiroshima, Japan, is part of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The ruin serves as a memorial to the people who were killed in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Over 70,000 people were killed instantly, and another 70,000 suffered fatal injuries from the radiation.’ (Wikipedia)

The flame was lit August 1, 1964 and has kept on since. It will keep burning silently till the day when nuclear weapons completely disappear from the face of the earth and peace prevails over the world.

The day was luckily of the traditional ancient ceremony to offer the first ears of rice of the year to God. We could watch the solemn but beautiful ceremony.

Itsukushima Shrine‐5 Noh Play on the Moonlit Outdoor Stage

f0268294_2157195.jpg

The program for the performance by Yasuyo Tomoeda designated as a living national treasure was “Tsunemasa ”. Tsunemasa is one of the nephews of Tairano Kiyomori, a powerful military leader of the 12 th century, who reconstructed Itsukushima Shrine as it is today that was founded in the 6th century.

Tsunemasa died in a fierce war at “Ichinotani ”. On the day of his memorial service, they put a famed Biwa instrument “Seizan” at the ritual site. Tsunemasa was very good at playing it and had loved the instrument so much as he could not resist coming back as a ghost that night. So he did.

The Noh stage is 558 years old constructed above the sea water. While performance the tide gradually came rising, and only the lights reflected on the waves lit the stage in an illusionary fashion. The atmosphere and the story matched so well that we felt as if we were watching real Tsunemasa.

We stayed in the room with a good view of the five-storied pagoda of Itsukushima Shrine. Getting power of spirit from the view, we went out for a morning walk. It was the time for fishing both for fishermen and a bird.

Itsukushima Shrine‐3 Main Shrine Building: A Good Day

May you both be happy for long years to come!

For those who wish to have a wedding ceremony at Itsukushima Shrine, you can add traditional Gigaku music and dancing optionally. How about thinking about it, holding your wedding ceremony at the World Heritage site?

Me? Sorry. Far too late.
