Beethoven & Picasso within Munakata Shikō

“Like the vastness of space, like a universe unlimited, untold, unattainable, and inscrutable that is the woodcut.” One of the quotations from what Munakata Shiko said.

Kurashiki is the home of Japan’s first museum for Western art, the Ohara Museum of Art. Established in 1930 by Magosaburo Ohara, a successor of a wealthy textile family, it contains paintings by El Greco, Monet, Matisse, Gauguin, Renoir and many others’. The collection also presents fine of Asian and contemporary art, including exquisite pottery and wood block prints. The main building is designed in the style of Neoclassicism. The citizens still talk as well about the hospital and other public facilities donated by Mr. Ohara still functioning.

The old merchant quarter is called the Bikan historical area. It has many fine examples of 17th century wooden warehouses painted white with traditional black tiles, along a canal framed with weeping willows.

If you are interested in seeing what traditional Japanese buildings and towns were like, you will find one of such districts in Kurashiki City, Okayama, which is designated as Japan’s ”Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings”.

I visit the city whenever I happen to have a chance for another reason, too. That is Ohara Museum of Art.

This time, my partner and I arrived Kurashiki late in the evening. We left our luggage and went out into the quiet streets after the tourists had withdrawn. A young tour-richsha man asked us to have his last round of the tour of the day. We said “OK”, and the tour turned out wonderful.

The Children’s Peace Monument

While in the hospital due to radiation-induced leukemia, the model of the statue, Sadako, started folding A-Thousand-Folded-Cranes to make her wish of recovery come true as our tradition told but she could not make it and died. Her classmates started a fund-raising campaign and the wave spread to build a statue representing the thousands of child victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

I made several visits to the place. But each time when I see young children visiting the place on a school excursion reading a poem loud, playing music, or offering artistic Thousand-Folded-Cranes to the Statue of Sadako, I am moved deeply.

May these young people live happily without the threat of nuclear weapons!

Sadako Sasaki
